| Nor'easter Doesn't Stop North - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 19:26 |
Not sure what the Athletic Director or Soccer Coach of Monsignor Bonner was thinking today but they decided to play North in the middle of this nor'easter that will be with us until Monday. Mind you, every other Catholic League game was postponed until Monday, heaven knows why the Friars wanted to play in this mess, but play we did. While the score was only 1-0, North dominated Bonner in every aspect of the game except the ability to keep warm. At half-time of the game, Bonner's boys disappeared into the equipment shed while the North boys were left to fend themselves against the rain and wind. Once again, a host showing great what sportsmanship is all about. Juan Pablo Martinez controlled most of all North's offensive possession throughout the match. In the first half, he had 3 great chances to score but shots were either beyond the net or at the keeper. In the first half, North seemed to be attacking uphill as the 20 mph wind knocked down all balls. In the 35th minute, Junior Tom Goodyear was fouled in the box and North was awarded a penalty kick. Martinez easily beat the keeper on the shot, but a North attacker encroached so Martinez had to retake the kick. Unfortunately, he got under the ball and hit the ball over the bar. In the waning minute, with the gust of wind behind him, a Bonner attacker took a shot from 40 that rattled the cross bar. After warming up at half time, Bonner's game was totally defensive. With the wind, North pushed forward with ease. Goodyear was all over the forward line either tracking down through balls or chasing defenders. Tom had several shots that were just off target. In the 57th minute, North was award a free kick, directly outside of the box, about 20 yards from goal. Martinez nudged the ball to his younger brother, Matt, who rifled a bullet of a shot into the lower left corner of the net. North continued the pressure but was unable to add to their lead. McCarthy was hardly tested and was credited with 4 saves for another clean sheet. Tyler Wolfingger and Tyler Ward held midfield and the backs disrupted all of Bonner's attack. Baranukas, Venuto and Brown played very well in helping McCarthy keep his shutout. Next up on Tuesday night is a rematch with first place Judge at UGH @ 8 PM. Alumni Game is on, rain or shine tomorrow, October 17 at Danubia @ 2PM. $50 gets you food, beverages and gear. Come be part of the solution, NO SURRENDER.
